Toshiba achieves storage capacities of over 30TB with advanced HDD technologies: HAMR and MAMR, promising significant advancements in data storage capabilities. Collaboration with Resonac Corporation and TDK Corporation drives further development to meet the increasing demands of cloud and datacenter storage.
15 May 2024 – Toshiba Electronic Components Taiwan Corporation (Toshiba) has reached a significant milestone in hard disk drive (HDD) technology, achieving storage capacities of over 30TB with two cutting-edge recording technologies: Heat Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) and Microwave Assisted Magnetic Recording (MAMR). These advancements mark a significant step toward the development of commercial products based on these emerging recording formats.
HAMR technology boosts magnetic recording capabilities by locally heating the disk with near-field light, resulting in a storage capacity of 32TB on 10 disks utilizing Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) technology. MAMR technology, which uses microwaves to enhance magnetic recording, achieved a storage capacity of 31TB by stacking 11 disks, employing SMR technology, and enhancing signal processing. These breakthroughs were the result of extensive collaboration with Resonac Corporation and TDK Corporation, with Toshiba and its partners committed to further developing both HAMR and MAMR technologies to meet the growing storage demands of the cloud and datacenters.
