Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called on companies to give interns a reasonable allowance to meet their daily needs during industrial training programs.
KUALA LUMPUR, 19 June 2023 – Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the Prime Minister and Finance Minister of Malaysia, has called on companies to consider offering a reasonable allowance to interns to cover their daily expenses during industrial training programs.
While the government has not established specific regulations regarding intern payment, Anwar emphasized the importance of companies prioritizing the welfare of trainees and recent graduates.
Speaking at the launch of the Capital Market Graduate Programme, Anwar highlighted the need to provide allowances to cover travel expenses, transportation fares, and meals for interns.
He shared his own experience of hiring interns while serving as the Opposition leader, where he ensured they received an allowance of at least RM1,000. Anwar emphasized the significance of internships in providing early exposure to work and the value of such experiences in meeting industry professionals and gaining a deeper understanding of relevant subjects.
