Microsoft is set to reveal new Surface devices powered by Qualcomm chips at an event ahead of its developer conference, highlighting a shift towards Arm architecture in the PC market. This move comes as Microsoft seeks to maintain its lead in AI technology development in collaboration with OpenAI.
20 May 2024 – Microsoft is poised to unveil an array of new consumer hardware and software products on Monday at its Redmond, Washington campus. The tech giant is expected to introduce updated versions of its Surface Pro tablet and Surface Laptop, both powered by Qualcomm chips utilizing Arm Holdings’ architecture.
Traditionally dominated by Intel processors, the personal computer market is witnessing a significant shift as Qualcomm and other manufacturers of low-power Arm components vie for a share. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite chips are particularly noteworthy for their integrated neural processing unit, which enhances AI-centric applications, including Microsoft’s Copilot software.
Scheduled just before Microsoft’s annual developer conference, the event will be exclusive to in-person attendance by journalists and industry analysts, with no live-streaming available.
Microsoft aims to leverage its early lead in AI tool development, a position bolstered by its collaboration with OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT. This partnership has enabled Microsoft to outpace Alphabet in the competitive AI landscape. The PC industry is under increased pressure from Apple, which has transitioned to custom chips based on Arm designs, moving away from Intel processors. Since 2016, Microsoft has partnered with Qualcomm to transition Windows to Arm chip designs, but with Qualcomm’s exclusivity expiring this year, other chip designers like Nvidia are preparing to enter the Arm-based PC chip market.
