MDEC Propels Tourism Tech Forward with Launch of Digital Tourism Innovation Lab Cohort 3

MDEC’s Digital Tourism Innovation Lab (DTIL) hosted its second Demo Day to promote technological innovation in Malaysia’s tourism industry, highlighting the need for digital transformation ahead of Visit Malaysia Year 2026. Cohort 3 applications are now open, inviting startups, investors, and industry players to drive the next wave of tourism tech innovation.


18 July 2024 – The Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), the leading digital economy agency in the nation, recently hosted the Digital Tourism Innovation Lab (DTIL) Demo Day Cohort 2. This event marks the second phase in a national initiative aimed at fostering technological innovation within Malaysia’s tourism sector.

DTIL, established through a collaboration between MDEC and accelerator partner 1337 Ventures, aims to nurture a robust ecosystem of tourism tech companies. This initiative supports the development of innovative tourism solutions, meets the growing digitalisation demands of industry players, and cultivates a vibrant tourism tech community in Malaysia.

During the event, Yang Berusaha Encik Ma Sivanesan, Deputy Secretary General (Digital Development) of the Ministry of Digital, praised the innovative solutions presented by the Cohort 2 participants. He highlighted the crucial role of digital innovation in transforming Malaysia’s tourism landscape and commended the companies for their efforts in developing and utilizing cutting-edge technologies.

Tourism is a vital component of Malaysia’s service sector, with significant potential to boost the nation’s GDP. The rise in digital adoption positions this sector for transformative growth. MDEC’s DTIL initiative underscores the importance and urgency of digitalizing the tourism industry, especially with Visit Malaysia Year 2026 on the horizon.

Building on the successes of Cohort 1 and 2, DTIL is excited to announce the launch of Cohort 3, with applications opening in July 2024. This third cohort aims to attract more innovative minds and foster partnerships that will drive the next wave of tourism tech innovation, leveraging advancements in AI, blockchain, Advanced 5G Network Connectivity, and other cutting-edge technologies.
