Mastercard has introduced the Mastercard Biometric Authentication Service, leveraging FIDO standards, to replace traditional authentication methods and enhance the security and convenience of digital interactions. The service integrates biometrics, such as fingerprint or face recognition, making account logins, account changes, and payment processes more seamless, supporting all card brands and various forms of payments.
25 January 2024 – Mastercard has launched the Mastercard Biometric Authentication Service, leveraging the latest Fast Identity Online (FIDO) standards to replace traditional authentication methods and make digital interactions more seamless and secure. The service allows businesses to integrate biometrics, such as fingerprint or face recognition, when logging into apps or websites and making online purchases, addressing the challenges and vulnerabilities associated with passwords and multi-factor authentication.
The move aligns with Mastercard’s commitment to accelerating the transition to secure and user-friendly authentication methods, particularly as approximately 80% of confirmed data breaches are linked to weak or stolen passwords. The Mastercard Biometric Authentication Service is based on FIDO standards, creating an encrypted key pair stored on users’ personal devices, with only their biometrics unlocking the passkey for seamless access to applications or websites. The service supports all card brands and various forms of payments beyond cards, enhancing security and providing a frictionless experience for consumers, while also reducing operational costs for merchants and financial institutions.
