LG Display has unveiled advanced OLED technologies at SID Display Week 2024, including the high-brightness OLEDoS for VR, large-sized OLED panels with META Technology 2.0, and automotive displays. These innovations underscore LG Display’s commitment to enhancing visual experiences and driving the future of display technology.
16 May 2024 – LG Display, the global leader in display innovation, has unveiled a range of groundbreaking OLED technologies at SID Display Week 2024. Held from May 14-16, the event showcases LG Display’s latest advancements, under the theme “A Better Future,” including state-of-the-art OLED solutions for virtual reality (VR), large-sized OLED panels, and automotive displays optimized for Software Defined Vehicles (SDVs).
A highlight of the exhibition is the debut of LG Display’s OLEDoS (OLED on Silicon) for VR, a revolutionary technology that delivers unprecedented screen brightness and resolution. Despite its compact 1.3-inch size, the OLEDoS achieves an ultra-high brightness of 10,000 nits and a 4K-class resolution of approximately 4,000 pixels per inch (ppi). It also meets over 97% of the DCI-P3 standard color area, ensuring exceptional color accuracy. These features collectively enhance the virtual reality experience by providing lifelike visuals with industry-leading picture quality.
The OLEDoS for VR integrates a high-performance OLED element with LG Display’s Micro Lens Array (MLA) technology, improving brightness by about 40%. MLA employs a layer of micrometer-sized convex lenses to maximize light emission, significantly reducing internal light reflection within the panel.
In addition to VR, LG Display is showcasing the world’s first OLEDoS for smartwatches, offering a 1.3-inch display with 4K resolution. This innovation includes glasses-free 3D technology, known as light field technology, which creates holographic-like effects for a more immersive viewing experience.
LG Display also highlights its dominance in large-sized OLEDs with demonstrations of 83-inch OLED TV and Gaming OLED panels, featuring META Technology 2.0. This technology increases brightness by 42% over conventional OLEDs, achieving a peak brightness of 3,000 nits. META Technology 2.0 combines the META Multi-Booster and Detail Enhancer algorithms with MLA+, comprising 42.4 billion micro lenses, to deliver vibrant and natural colors in any environment.
Another key exhibit is the 27-inch 480 Hz QHD Gaming OLED panel, the first OLED to offer a 480 Hz refresh rate, ensuring ultra-smooth and clear transitions for an optimal gaming experience. Additionally, the 39-inch Ultra-Wide Gaming OLED panel, with a 21:9 aspect ratio and 800R curvature, enhances immersion by maintaining a consistent viewing distance across the screen.
In the automotive sector, LG Display presents high-definition OLEDs and LTPS LCDs tailored for SDVs. Their Advanced Thin OLED (ATO) is 20% thinner than typical glass substrate OLEDs, offering sleek designs and improved price competitiveness without compromising on picture quality. The Tandem OLED technology, which stacks two organic light-emitting layers, provides superior durability, high brightness, and extended lifespan.
LG Display also introduces a Glassless 3D Dashboard and a Transparent OLED with improved transparency from 45% to 60%, achieved through optimized pixel structure and operating parts.
“We are committed to continuous innovation, providing new value to our customers through relentless research and development, and solidifying our technological leadership,” said Soo-young Yoon, CTO and Executive Vice President at LG Display.
