Malaysia, 8 June 2017: Ransomware, a kind of cyber attack that demands a ransom be paid once hackers take control of a computer system or network, has become a rising trend among hackers looking for a quick payout.

WannaCry, a global ransomware attack was unleashed recently, crippling more than 200,000 organizations in 150 countries, including in Malaysia. The ransomware spreads across local networks, systems that have not been recently updated with the latest security updates.

In response to the fear and uncertainty surrounding WannaCry, especially the big questions of is the network infected, or safe, and what can be done to safeguard data, while retrieving ransomed data, Kaspersky Lab, a global cybersecurity company and anti-virus provider, has organized a free education workshop, Kaspersky Lab’s “Shed No Tears Over WannaCry” FREE education workshop was held the St Giles The Gardens Hotel Ballroom on Level 5 on Friday, June 2, 2017 from 9.30am to noon. The latest release from Kaspersky Lab, Kaspersky Office Security software, offers ramped up Ransomware protection for small businesses to stay on top of the ever-growing number of cyberthreats, including WannaCry. . The latest version of Kaspersky Small Office Security offers enriched protection against the growing threat of “cryptors”. Anti-ransomware capabilities in the System Watcher component not only block malicious encryption attempts, but also trigger an automatic backup and restore for ultimate peace of mind.

According to Ms. Sylvia Ng, General Manager – SEA of Kaspersky Lab, education and information can be the best preventive strategy against emerging malware and cyberthreats, so that owners of small to medium businesses can protect their companies better from threats such as WannaCry.
