20 March 2024 – In 2023, Kaspersky anti-phishing technologies detected close to half a million attempts targeting businesses’ devices in Southeast Asia (SEA), specifically related to finance matters like e-commerce, banking, and payment systems. These phishing attempts aim to trick users into divulging personal information by impersonating trusted entities, highlighting the growing threat of social engineering schemes in the region.
Financial phishing, a subset of phishing attacks, saw a significant rise in the SEA region last year, with Kaspersky solutions blocking over 455,000 attempts targeting companies of various sizes. The Philippines recorded the highest number of incidents, followed by Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, and Singapore, indicating the widespread nature of this cyber threat.Yeo Siang Tiong, General Manager for Southeast Asia at Kaspersky, emphasizes the effectiveness of phishing techniques in infiltrating business networks, especially with the aid of generative AI, making it challenging for users to discern between legitimate and fraudulent communications. As businesses face increasing risks from such attacks, Kaspersky experts recommend a multi-faceted approach to cybersecurity, including employee education, professional services assessments, and the deployment of robust enterprise security solutions with anti-phishing capabilities.
