Equinix Announces First Data Center in Kuala Lumpur to Support Malaysia’s Digital Economy

Equinix, Inc., a leading global provider of digital infrastructure solutions, has revealed its plans to establish its first data center in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in the first quarter of 2024. This expansion follows Equinix’s previous announcement of a data center in Johor, demonstrating the company’s commitment to investing in Malaysia as it emerges as a strategic regional hub for digital interconnection.

The decision to expand in Malaysia is driven by the country’s rapid growth in cloud services, e-commerce adoption, and continued investment in 5G technology. As one of the fastest-growing data center markets in the ASEAN region, Malaysia, particularly Johor and Kuala Lumpur, has experienced significant development in response to increasing demand. Equinix’s entry into the market is expected to meet the rising needs of local and global businesses expanding their presence in the country.

As Malaysia progresses into Phase 2 of its MyDIGITAL blueprint, which outlines a comprehensive digital transformation strategy, the demand for digital infrastructure is expected to remain strong. Synergy Research reports that Malaysia is already the third largest data center colocation market in ASEAN, with a projected compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 11% from 2022 to 2027. Equipped with extensive experience in supporting 5G development, Equinix’s new facility, named KL1, aims to accelerate Malaysia’s digital vision as a hub for colocation in ASEAN and a regional powerhouse in the digital economy.

Jeremy Deutsch, President, Asia-Pacific, Equinix, expressed excitement about the company’s continued investment in Malaysia, stating, “By expanding Platform Equinix in the two most strategic metros in Malaysia, we will enable Malaysian businesses, as well as multinationals with a presence in Malaysia, to leverage a trusted platform to bring together and interconnect the foundational infrastructure to power their success. We believe the two data centers will fuel Equinix’s existing data center momentum and support Malaysia’s aspirations as a digitally driven connectivity hub.”
