18 December 2023 – In a cautionary revelation, cybersecurity experts at Kaspersky have uncovered a surge in online phishing scams exploiting the anticipation surrounding the upcoming release of the film “Wonka.” Cybercriminals are capitalizing on the excitement by duping unsuspecting fans into divulging sensitive personal information and risking financial loss.
Dubbed as the “Wonka” streaming service, scammers utilize a seemingly authentic platform, enticing users with a promise of free global streaming of the beloved movie before its official release. Leveraging the survey site “surveymonkey,” individuals are lured into a fake site where, instead of the cinematic delight they expect, they are prompted to register for the movie. The deceptive site then leads them to a pop-up screen, masquerading as an account creation interface, where they are coerced into providing their bank card details, personal identification number, and other sensitive information, potentially leading to unauthorized and challenging-to-cancel debits. In addition to financial risks, users also face the possibility of their pilfered information being sold on the dark web.
Egor Bubnov, Senior Web Content Analyst at Kaspersky, warns that malevolent actors are exploiting the public’s enthusiasm for the whimsical world of Willy Wonka for nefarious purposes. He emphasizes the importance of vigilance and adherence to online safety rules to ensure that cybercriminals do not tarnish the magical experience of movie enthusiasts.
