The Alliance to End Plastic Waste launches innovative ‘Solution Model’ playbooks, providing actionable strategies for stakeholders to combat plastic pollution and promote circularity in the plastic economy.
17 April 2024 – The Alliance to End Plastic Waste has launched the first pair of ‘Solution Model’ playbooks, designed to provide insights and strategies for stakeholders across the plastic value chain. These playbooks aim to foster a deeper understanding of potential solutions and drive systemic change to combat plastic waste and promote a circular economy for plastics.
Plastic pollution presents a multifaceted challenge globally, requiring diverse solutions tailored to specific contexts. The Alliance’s Solution Models initiative focuses on developing, refining, and demonstrating effective strategies to address various sources of plastic waste. Collaborating with Boston Consulting Group (BCG), the Alliance has released playbooks on Engaging Households in Segregated Municipal Waste Collection and Unlocking Value Through Basic Manual Sorting of Municipal Waste.
These playbooks offer insights gleaned from Alliance projects in Argentina, China, India, Indonesia, Brazil, Kenya, and other countries, outlining practical steps to encourage waste segregation at the source and enhance the value recovery of plastic waste for recycling. They also highlight the enabling conditions necessary for successful implementation, from policy support to business models and innovation.
Jacob Duer, President and CEO of the Alliance, emphasizes the importance of environmentally sound, socially responsible, and economically viable solutions to advance the transition to a circular economy for plastics. Marc Schmidt, Managing Director and Partner at BCG, Singapore, underscores the urgency of addressing plastic waste leakage by collaborating with stakeholders and implementing practical, locally adaptable solutions.
The release of these playbooks marks a significant step in the Alliance’s mission to drive systemic change and accelerate progress toward plastic circularity. Additional Solution Model playbooks are slated for release later this year, furthering the organization’s commitment to collaborative action in tackling the plastic waste challenge.
