Agoda has reported a 167% increase in searches by Malaysians for international travel during the Malaysia Day long weekend, with Thailand emerging as the top destination. Popular choices like Hat Yai, Krabi, and Phuket reflect Malaysians’ growing interest in cultural and culinary exploration abroad.


2 September 2024 – Digital travel platform Agoda has reported a significant rise in the number of Malaysians planning international travel for the upcoming Malaysia Day long weekend. According to Agoda’s data, searches for international destinations have surged by 167% compared to last year’s Malaysia Day holidays, indicating a growing trend of Malaysians opting to spend the public holiday abroad.

Traditionally a time for gathering with family and friends, the Malaysia Day holiday on September 16 is now increasingly seen as an opportunity for travel. Agoda’s insights reveal that Thailand has emerged as the top choice for Malaysian travelers, with cities like Hat Yai, Krabi, and Phuket ranking among the top five dream destinations. Notably, Hat Yai saw the most significant increase in accommodation searches, with a 516% rise compared to 2023.
