Truecaller Launches AI Call Scanner to Combat AI-Generated Voice Scams in Real-Time

Truecaller introduces the AI Call Scanner, an innovative feature using AI to detect AI-generated voice scams in real-time. Initially available for Android in the US, this feature enhances Truecaller’s scam-fighting capabilities and aims to safeguard users against emerging threats.

29 May 2024 – Truecaller, the world’s leading global communications platform, is excited to announce the launch of its latest feature, the AI Call Scanner. This innovative tool harnesses the power of artificial intelligence to protect users from AI-generated voice scams, providing real-time warnings during phone calls.

Revolutionary AI Detection Technology

The AI Call Scanner is designed to detect and differentiate between human voices and AI-synthesized voices. Leveraging Truecaller’s extensive data, history of identifying calling patterns, community input, and advanced technology, the AI Call Scanner alerts users to suspicious calls or text messages even before they answer. With this new feature, Truecaller adds an additional layer of protection, safeguarding users throughout their call experience.

Addressing the Growing Threat of AI Voice Cloning

AI voice synthesizers can clone a voice with just three seconds of audio, posing significant risks. These technologies are becoming more accessible and are often used for fraudulent activities, preying on the vulnerabilities of individuals. The AI Call Scanner aims to combat this threat by providing users with a reliable tool to identify potential scams in real-time.

How It Works

The AI Call Scanner is integrated into the Truecaller Android app as part of the Premium subscription, initially rolling out in the US market. When a user receives a suspicious call, they can tap a dedicated button within the Truecaller interface. The call is merged with a secure phone line, which records a sample of the caller’s voice. This sample is then processed by Truecaller’s advanced AI model, trained to identify the unique characteristics of human speech and distinguish them from AI-generated voices. The entire process is completed in just a few seconds, ensuring quick and accurate detection.

Statements from Truecaller Leadership

“The risks of AI voice scams are increasing due to the proliferation of AI voice synthesizers. Our goal has been to find an effective and reliable solution before things get out of hand. I am proud to announce that Truecaller is the world’s first dialler with AI voice detection built in. Truecaller already uses AI in many different ways and this was a logical and much-needed extension of Truecaller’s scam fighting abilities,” said Alan Mamedi, CEO and Co-founder at Truecaller.

Future Plans

While the AI Call Scanner is debuting on Android, Truecaller is actively working on an iOS launch. The team is also exploring further improvements to enhance the AI model’s accuracy, reduce response times, and adapt to new voice synthesis trends. Additionally, Truecaller is considering integration with other communication platforms and devices to broaden the feature’s reach and impact.
