MALAYSIA< 19 OCTOBER 2026 – Global cybersecurity leader Sophos today announced the general availability of Sophos AI Defense, a new solution engineered to identify unsanctioned AI applications and enforce organizational policy wherever they operate.
Unmonitored AI tools present potential vulnerabilities across confidentiality, integrity, and operational availability. Delivered via Sophos Fusion, the AI-native cybersecurity defense architecture, Sophos AI Defense integrates security controls across device, network, identity, and browser layers into a unified security baseline. The single-platform design allows enterprise security teams to accelerate safe AI adoption without adding disconnected security tools.
The release responds to heightened adversary exploitation of AI technology. Sophos X-Ops threat intelligence tracked malicious actors deploying autonomous AI agents within corporate networks to generate and test nearly 80 malware modules, alongside dark web trading of frontier model API keys, jailbreak techniques, and prompt engineering recruitment.
Enterprise telemetry reveals widespread exposure to unsanctioned AI tools. Industry research indicates 69 percent of security leaders suspect or confirm employee usage of unapproved AI applications, 82 percent identified shadow AI agents in their environments over the past year, and 90 percent report concerns regarding shadow AI risks. The operational challenge is set to expand rapidly as analyst firm IDC projects 1.3 billion AI agents globally by 2028.
Sophos AI Defense evaluates signals across system layers to map AI activity, evaluating user identity, behavioral context, and data involvement to distinguish routine usage from security events. Real-time inspection controls review prompts and file uploads as they occur to prevent sensitive data exposure, forwarding event telemetry into Sophos Fusion for investigation via Sophos XDR and Sophos MDR analyst workflows.
Kyle Falkenhagen, Senior Vice President of Product Management at Sophos, highlighted that enterprises are deploying AI faster than existing infrastructure can secure it. He noted that Sophos AI Defense provides security teams with explicit visibility and policy enforcement capabilities required to manage AI integration safely.
Anthony Bender, Chief Technology Officer at Empyreal Logistics, shared that the deployment allows the company to regulate unsanctioned AI tool usage while demonstrating clear AI governance and compliance verification to enterprise clients.
Sophos AI Defense is available immediately for enterprises and managed service providers (MSPs).
