Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim calls for a mindset shift towards ESG practices, highlighting the need for collaborative efforts to achieve sustainability and net-zero emissions. The launch of the Asia ESG Positive Impact Consortium (A-Epic) underscores the commitment to these principles across the region.
21 June 2024 – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasized the necessity of a mindset shift towards Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices, asserting that such a shift extends beyond mere regulatory compliance. Speaking at the launch of the Asia ESG Positive Impact Consortium (A-Epic) on June 21, Anwar underscored the importance of a collaborative effort between the government, private sector, and the public to achieve net-zero carbon emissions.
Anwar highlighted the critical role of stakeholders—including businesses, civil society, and individuals—in working together to ensure a sustainable and secure future for the next generation. He addressed the pressing environmental challenges, such as rising temperatures, severe storms, and prolonged droughts, which necessitate a global commitment to emission reductions and green innovation.
Malaysia, Anwar noted, has taken a progressive stance on decarbonization and sustainability. The national development ethos, Madani, includes sustainability as one of its core principles. The government is committed to integrating ESG principles into governance to secure a prosperous future. This commitment is reflected in multifaceted policies aimed at reducing carbon emissions, promoting social equity, and fostering growth in the green economy, supported by substantial investments in renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and green transportation.
The launch of A-Epic, a collaboration among Star Media Group, Kompas Gramedia’s KG Media, and the Inquirer Group of Companies, aims to reach 123 million people across the region by fostering collaborative actions among stakeholders, businesses, and the public. The event, held at the Sime Darby Convention Centre, was attended by key figures including Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, KG Media CEO Andy Budiman, Philippine Daily Inquirer CEO Rudyard Arbolado, Indonesian Ambassador to Malaysia Datuk Hermono, and Philippines’ Ambassador to Malaysia Maria Angela Abrera Ponce.
