Network Infiltration Tops Cybersecurity Concerns for Businesses in 2024

A new report from Kaspersky reveals that network infiltration attempts were the most common security threat faced by businesses in 2024, highlighting the growing sophistication of cybercriminals and the vulnerabilities posed by human error and remote work. Companies of all sizes struggled to secure their networks, with large enterprises experiencing the highest rate of incidents despite robust security measures.

23 January 2025 – According to Kaspersky’s latest IT Security Economics report, businesses worldwide grappled with a barrage of network security threats throughout 2024. A staggering 88% of companies reported attempts by malicious actors to breach their networks, with over 60% experiencing incidents involving the execution of malicious code or attempts to control compromised systems.

Surprisingly, large enterprises, despite employing comprehensive security measures, faced the highest frequency of these attacks. Small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) also proved vulnerable, with a significant portion of incidents attributed to employee negligence or deliberate actions.

“Network security threats are still the most concerning for businesses,” the report emphasizes. Cybercriminals exploit system vulnerabilities to gain unauthorized access, deploying malware, spyware, and other harmful software, or leveraging these weaknesses for social engineering attacks.

The report identifies several factors contributing to the persistence of network security issues:

  • Evolving Cyber Threats: Cybercriminals constantly refine their tactics, making it challenging for businesses to keep pace. From phishing and ransomware to DDoS attacks and advanced persistent threats (APTs), the methods of attack are diverse and constantly evolving.
  • Remote Work and BYOD: The rise of remote work and bring-your-own-device policies has expanded the attack surface, increasing the potential for security breaches.
  • Human Error: Employee negligence, often stemming from a lack of awareness or inadequate training, remains a significant factor. Phishing attacks and insider threats continue to pose serious risks.

Kaspersky’s report underscores the importance of a multi-layered approach to cybersecurity. The company recommends a combination of:

  • Employee Education: Raising awareness about cyber threats and investing in comprehensive training programs.
  • Security Audits and Monitoring: Regularly identifying and addressing vulnerabilities.
  • Specialized Security Solutions: Implementing real-time protection, threat visibility, and incident response capabilities.

“Ultimately, a combination of technological solutions and proactive employee education is essential in safeguarding a company’s data and reputation in the digital landscape,” the report concludes.
