Meta Platforms is developing AI technology specifically for Europe, using publicly shared content from Instagram and Facebook to train its models while excluding private posts to respect user privacy.
10 June 2024 – Meta Platforms Inc. announced on Monday that it is developing artificial intelligence (AI) technology specifically tailored for Europe, taking into account the continent’s diverse linguistic, geographic, and cultural nuances. This strategic move aims to enhance user experience by incorporating European-specific references into Meta’s AI systems.
Meta will train its large language models using publicly shared content from European Union users on its platforms, including Instagram and Facebook. The company emphasized that it will exclude private posts shared only with family and friends to respect consumer privacy.
Meta’s top policy executive explained in a September interview with Reuters that while the company used public posts from Facebook and Instagram to train parts of its new Meta AI virtual assistant, it remained committed to protecting users’ privacy. The company also announced last month that it would begin notifying users in the European region and the United Kingdom about how their public information is used to develop and improve AI technologies.
