MDEC’s East Africa Mission Secures USD 17.5M Deals, Drives Digital Collaboration in Kenya and Tanzania

MDEC successfully concluded a business mission to East Africa, forging partnerships worth over USD 17.5 million in education and agriculture, while exploring market opportunities valued at MYR 160 million. The initiative strengthens Malaysia’s ties with Kenya and Tanzania, advancing digital transformation in the region.


6 December 2024 – The Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) has concluded a groundbreaking business mission to East Africa, targeting Kenya and Tanzania as key markets for digital transformation. The mission featured five innovative Malaysian technology companies specializing in animation, smart agriculture, education, cybersecurity, and fintech. This initiative underscores MDEC’s role as a catalyst for global digital collaboration.

With a combined population exceeding 120 million and a burgeoning digital economy, East Africa presents immense opportunities driven by its young and tech-savvy population. The mission aligned with Kenya’s Digital Economy Acceleration Project (KDEAP) and Tanzania’s Digitalisation Agenda 2034, both aimed at fostering socio-economic progress through technology.

Key Achievements

1. Strategic Partnerships:

  • AI Smartual Learning and Agile Business Solution Limited: Secured a USD 15 million agreement to implement AI-powered educational solutions in 25,000 Kenyan schools, covering 69% of the country’s educational institutions.
  • Meraque Group and Webmaster Kenya Limited: Launched a USD 1 million partnership to revolutionize Kenya’s agriculture using drone technology.
  • Meraque Group and Digital Mobile Africa Limited: Established a USD 1.5 million collaboration to enhance precision farming in Tanzania through drone-powered solutions.

2. Market Expansion:
Malaysian tech companies identified market opportunities worth MYR 160 million across East Africa’s high-growth sectors, including education, agriculture, fintech, animation, and cybersecurity.

3. Fostering Collaboration:
The mission facilitated over 160 strategic engagements with local businesses, governments, and ecosystem stakeholders, laying the groundwork for sustained cross-border partnerships and innovation.
