At the Smart City Expo World Congress 2024 in Barcelona, Malaysia launched the Malaysia Pavilion, showcasing innovative digital city solutions by leading Malaysian organizations. The event reflects Malaysia’s commitment to advancing urban sustainability, with plans to host the Smart City Expo Kuala Lumpur (SCEKL) in 2025.
7 November 2024 – The Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), in partnership with Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) and MyDIGITAL Corporation, launched the Malaysia Pavilion at the Smart City Expo World Congress (SCEWC 2024) in Fira Barcelona Gran Via, Spain. The pavilion highlights Malaysia’s strong commitment to advancing digital city initiatives and building international collaborations aimed at fostering urban innovation and sustainability.

Officiated by the Honourable Gobind Singh Deo, Minister of Digital Malaysia, the pavilion presents 11 leading Malaysian organizations showcasing their digital city solutions. These organizations are displaying cutting-edge technologies and innovative products and services, providing attendees with the opportunity to engage directly with Malaysian innovators, explore potential collaborations, and witness the transformative power of Malaysia’s growing digital economy.
SCEWC 2024 serves as a global platform for industry leaders, policymakers, and innovators, spotlighting Malaysia’s strategic vision of leveraging digital technologies to enhance urban living and improve the digital experiences of its citizens. The Malaysia Pavilion acts as a central hub for discussing the future of digital cities and promoting the nation’s advanced technological solutions.
Anuar Fariz Fadzil, CEO of MDEC, emphasized that the pavilion was designed to encourage collaboration and foster partnerships, while also learning from European best practices in digital city governance. He added, “At the same time, we are building strong alliances to boost Malaysian digital exports and investments.”
Building on its commitment, Malaysia’s Ministry of Digital also announced that Malaysia will be the first Southeast Asian country to host the Smart City Expo Kuala Lumpur (SCEKL) in September 2025. As ASEAN Chair next year, Malaysia aims to connect the region with the latest innovations and foster the development of more efficient, sustainable cities.
Datuk Azman Ismail, CEO of DNB, highlighted the transformative potential of 5G-powered smart city applications, such as autonomous vehicles, advanced public transportation systems, smart lighting, real-time traffic management, and intelligent water and waste management. These technologies rely on AI, IoT, and ultra-low latency connectivity, and DNB is positioned as the backbone of Malaysia’s digital city transformation.
Adrian Marcellus, CEO of MyDIGITAL Corporation, emphasized the importance of inclusivity in digital city development. He stated, “Through global collaboration, we aim to address our cities’ most urgent challenges—improving quality of life, enhancing resilience, and fostering equitable opportunities for all.”
These initiatives underscore Malaysia’s ongoing commitment to building a robust digital economy, encouraging international collaboration, and setting new standards for sustainable urban living.
