Mah Sing Group Berhad has entered the data centre sector with the launch of Mah Sing DC Hub@Southville City, partnering with Bridge Data Centres to develop a significant digital infrastructure hub. This initiative supports Malaysia’s digital transformation and positions the country as a prime location for data centre investments.
30 May 2024 – Mah Sing Group Berhad, a leading Malaysian developer, has launched its first significant project in the data centre sector with Mah Sing DC Hub@Southville City. The venture’s first partner is Bridge Data Centres (BDC), primarily owned by Bain Capital. This landmark collaboration was formalized in a signing ceremony attended by Malaysia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, Dato’ Sri Haji Fadillah bin Haji Yusof.
Mah Sing Group has designated 150 acres in Southville City for development into a leading Data Centre Hub with a planned capacity of up to 500MW. The initial phase involves a collaboration with BDC to develop 17.55 acres for a data centre with a planned capacity of up to 100MW. Mah Sing envisions the DC Hub as a comprehensive digital infrastructure ecosystem designed to support AI, hyperscale, retail, and enterprise service providers. This facility aims to attract major technology companies, telecommunications firms, and financial institutions, reflecting Mah Sing’s commitment to advancing Malaysia’s digital infrastructure and technological innovation.
The collaboration agreement was signed by Benjamin Ong, CEO of Mah Sing’s Property Subsidiaries, and Eric Fan, President of Bridge Data Centres, with Dato’ Sri Haji Fadillah Yusof and other notable figures witnessing the event.
Strategically located just 19 kilometres from Kuala Lumpur City Centre, Southville City offers essential infrastructure for this major development. The site is also less than 50km from Telekom Malaysia’s upcoming new cable landing station in Morib, Selangor, part of the SEA-ME-WE-6 submarine cable system. This proximity allows the DC Hub to provide a dark fiber network, enhancing connectivity. Completion of the Morib landing station is expected in the first quarter of 2025.
Deputy Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Fadillah Yusof praised the venture, noting its alignment with Malaysia’s digital transformation goals and economic growth. He highlighted the nation’s strategic position for data centre investments in the Asia Pacific region, supported by government policies and incentives like the establishment of a smart grid and renewable energy initiatives.
Eric Fan of BDC expressed confidence in the collaboration, citing Malaysia’s superior infrastructure and skilled workforce as key factors. He emphasized that Mah Sing’s comprehensive approach ensures the data centre will meet all regulatory requirements and be built to high standards, attracting significant interest from end users.
Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Leong Hoy Kum, Founder and Group Managing Director of Mah Sing, emphasized the strategic importance of the project. He highlighted Southville City’s ideal location within a strategic triangle of data centre hubs, reinforcing Malaysia’s digital transformation and technological advancement. This move diversifies Mah Sing’s revenue streams, adding a resilient financial foundation through recurring income from the data centre sector.
Mah Sing’s other landbanks, such as MSS Business Park in Sepang, also present potential for similar data centre collaborations, underscoring the company’s commitment to leveraging assets for long-term growth. This expansion into the data centre market aligns with the company’s vision to innovate in property development and explore opportunities in AI and IoT.
