16 March 2024 – The latest Kaspersky State of Stalkerware 2023 report has shed light on the pervasive issue of digital stalking, revealing that nearly 31,000 mobile users worldwide fell victim to stalkerware in the past year. Additionally, the report underscores broader concerns, with 40% of respondents worldwide reporting experiences of stalking or suspicion of being stalked, reflecting the widespread nature of the problem.

Stalkerware, often disguised as legitimate anti-theft or parental control apps, grants perpetrators surreptitious access to their victims’ digital lives, posing a serious threat to privacy and security. Despite efforts to combat this issue, the report shows a concerning 5.8% increase in stalkerware victims compared to the previous year, highlighting the persistent challenge of digital stalking globally.

In Malaysia, one third of respondents reported experiencing stalking or suspected stalking through phone apps, with 18% reporting physical stalking incidents. Moreover, 44% expressed concerns about online stalking, underscoring the urgent need for awareness and preventive measures in the country.

The report also delves into attitudes toward privacy within intimate partner relationships, revealing complex dynamics. While a majority disapprove of monitoring partners without their knowledge, significant percentages express willingness to share personal information, reflecting nuanced perspectives on privacy and transparency.

David Emm, security and data privacy expert at Kaspersky, emphasizes the importance of fostering open communication and digital literacy to address these challenges effectively. The fight against stalkerware requires collaborative efforts from various sectors, including technology companies, law enforcement agencies, and victim support organizations.

Kaspersky has been at the forefront of combating stalkerware, developing innovative solutions and partnering with stakeholders worldwide through initiatives like the Coalition Against Stalkerware. By raising awareness and providing support to victims, Kaspersky aims to create a safer digital environment for all.
