JCB and MUFG Bank have signed a memorandum of understanding to build a comprehensive strategic alliance in ASEAN, combining their payment networks and financial services to target the region’s growing affluent segment and digital payment demand.

MALAYSIA, 6 JULY 2026 – JCB Co., Ltd., Japan’s only international payment brand, and MUFG Bank, Ltd., a consolidated subsidiary of Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, have entered into a memorandum of understanding for a comprehensive strategic alliance across the ASEAN region. The partnership is designed to combine both companies’ customer bases and financial and payment networks to jointly drive business expansion and create new value across Southeast Asia. The two companies point to ASEAN’s sustained economic growth as a key driver behind the alliance, noting that the region’s expanding affluent segment and rising adoption of digital payments are pushing demand for more sophisticated and diverse financial services. Under the agreement, MUFG Bank will contribute its partner bank network, digital business investments and financial infrastructure, while JCB will bring its global payment network, Japan’s largest merchant network and payment service expertise.

The collaboration centers on two main areas. The first is strengthening financial services for affluent customers in ASEAN, where the companies plan to offer card products providing exclusive experiences and benefits in Japan, linked with financial services such as deposits and investments. As an initial step in fiscal year 2026, the alliance plans to issue a new premium card in Indonesia that will represent JCB’s highest-tier card ever issued outside Japan.

The second area involves expanding collaboration in the ASEAN payment domain, where both companies will explore partnerships between MUFG’s digital finance investees and JCB’s payment capabilities. This includes considering the expansion of cross-border payment solutions and mobile services to accelerate the development of digital payment ecosystems across the region.

Beyond financial services, the alliance aims to establish what the companies describe as a Japan-led financial and payment partnership platform centered on MUFG Bank and JCB in ASEAN. Building on this foundation, the two firms intend to broaden partnerships with a wider range of Japanese companies, aiming to enhance the global reach of Japanese brands and services while also supporting Japan’s positioning as a leading tourism destination.

Following the signing of the MOU, JCB and MUFG Bank said they will move forward with concrete initiatives, with plans to further expand partnerships with Japanese companies and pursue sustainable growth and new value creation across ASEAN.
