The collaboration between Green EV Charge (GEV) and PLUS Malaysia aims to benefit SMEs and individuals working in the E&E and automotive industries by developing Malaysia’s first chargEV hyperpower DC fast charging hub. The initiative supports the National Automotive Policy’s strategy to enhance the EV industry’s value chain and aligns with Malaysia’s goal of being carbon-neutral by 2050. GEV, a joint venture between Yinson GreenTech and GreenTech Malaysia Alliances, will oversee the commercialization and operation of the charging infrastructure. The fast charging hub will introduce a new concept of EV charging to Malaysians and offer multiple fast chargers, along with mobility retail and amenities.
KUALA LUMPUR, 26 June 2023 – The Investment, Trade, and Industry Ministry (MITI) has expressed its anticipation for the collaboration between Green EV Charge Sdn Bhd (GEV) and PLUS Malaysia Bhd to benefit Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the domestic supply chain, as well as individuals employed in the Electric and Electronics (E&E) and automotive industries. The joint effort aims to develop Malaysia’s first chargEV hyperpower Direct Current (DC) fast charging hub, aligning with the National Automotive Policy’s (NAP) strategy to enhance the value chain of the Electric Vehicle (EV) industry.
Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz stated, “Our NAP is focused on developing the whole ecosystem for Next Generation Vehicles (NxGV), which includes Energy Efficient Vehicles (EEV) and the necessary nationwide charging network. In addition to helping us achieve our national target of 10,000 charging points by 2025, this collaboration supports Malaysia’s goal of becoming carbon-neutral by 2050.” The comments were made during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between GEV and PLUS for the joint development of the first chargEV hyperpower DC fast charging hub along the PLUS highway.
GEV, a joint venture between Yinson GreenTech (YGT) and GreenTech Malaysia Alliances Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation, will spearhead the commercialization, operation, and maintenance of charging infrastructure in Malaysia through chargEV. The fast charging hub will introduce Malaysians to a brand-new concept of EV charging, offering multiple fast EV chargers alongside mobility retail, food and beverage outlets, and other amenities.
YGT has already upgraded one Alternate Current (AC) EV charging point to a Direct Current Fast Charger (DCFC) at the Ayer Keroh Overhead Bridge Restaurant (Southbound). As part of the MoU, YGT plans to upgrade and provide five more DCFC chargers at Rest and Service Areas (RSA) located in Tapah (Southbound), Dengkil (Southbound), Gunung Semanggol (Northbound), Pagoh (Southbound), and Seremban (Northbound).
The first fast charging hub in Malaysia will be located at the PLUS Seremban RSA (Southbound), featuring eight charging bays with a power output of up to 350kW each, capable of fully charging an EV within 20 minutes.
The collaboration between GEV and PLUS will leverage the expertise of both parties to maximize mutual benefits, expand and enhance products and services, and drive strategic innovation. The MoU establishes a strong working relationship and effective mechanisms for project implementation. Together, the companies will support the nation in providing EV infrastructure aligned with the Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint (LCMB) and develop new ideas to cater to the growth of the EV market.
PLUS Chairman Datuk Mohamad Nasir Ab Latif emphasized that this collaborative initiative will promote low carbon mobility practices, accelerate EV adoption, and contribute to the government’s 2050 carbon-neutral aspirations. He also highlighted PLUS’s efforts, in collaboration with the Works Ministry and the Malaysian Highway Authority, to develop an EV charging station roadmap with a target of 100 DCFC charge points by 2025.
