Equinix, Inc. has opened two new IBX® data centers in Johor and Kuala Lumpur, enhancing Malaysia’s digital infrastructure and supporting its ambition to become a regional digital hub. These facilities will provide businesses with advanced connectivity and support Malaysia’s digital transformation goals under the MyDIGITAL initiative.
27 May 2024 – Equinix, Inc., the global leader in digital infrastructure, has inaugurated two International Business Exchange™ (IBX®) data centers in Johor (JH1) and Kuala Lumpur (KL1), Malaysia. These carrier-neutral facilities are set to bolster Malaysia’s ambition of becoming a regional digital hub, providing businesses with access to a global ecosystem of over 10,000 enterprises, networks, and cloud service providers.
The JH1 data center, located at Nusajaya Tech Park in Iskandar Puteri, Johor, benefits from its proximity to Singapore, being just 15 kilometers away. With an initial investment of $40 million, JH1 offers 500 cabinets and 1,800 square meters of colocation space, addressing the increasing digital demands of both local and regional enterprises. The KL1 facility, situated in Cyberjaya, Kuala Lumpur, part of the Multimedia Super Corridor, is expected to accommodate 900 cabinets and provide 2,630 square meters of colocation space upon full build-out.
Both facilities will operate using 100% renewable energy, supporting Equinix’s goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2030. This initiative is part of a broader commitment to environmental sustainability, with the company already reaching 96% renewable energy coverage across its global operations in 2023.
Equinix will introduce comprehensive interconnection and digital services at both JH1 and KL1. These include Equinix Internet Access, Equinix Fabric®, and Equinix Fabric Cloud Router, enhancing connectivity, scalability, and performance for businesses. The services are scheduled to roll out in stages starting from Q2 2024.
The expansion aligns with Malaysia’s MyDIGITAL initiative and the New Industrial Masterplan (NIMP) 2030, which aim to accelerate the nation’s digital transformation. The data centers will foster innovation, drive economic growth, and create high-value job opportunities, particularly for domestic SMEs.
Jeremy Deutsch, President, Asia-Pacific, Equinix, emphasized Malaysia’s strategic significance and Equinix’s dedication to supporting the region’s digital transformation. Malaysia’s Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, YB Senator Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul Abdul Aziz, highlighted the role of Equinix’s data centers in enhancing the country’s digital infrastructure.
Local leaders and industry representatives have praised Equinix’s investment, recognizing its potential to enhance Malaysia’s technological capabilities, attract global businesses, and drive economic development. Equinix’s new data centers are set to play a pivotal role in positioning Malaysia as a key player in the digital economy, fostering innovation, and enabling businesses to thrive in the digital age.
