Alibaba’s International E-commerce Unit Embraces AI for Global Market Expansio

Alibaba’s international e-commerce arm, led by Alibaba International Digital Commerce, is integrating AI tools for translation, content creation, and more to support global merchants. Despite geopolitical challenges, Alibaba remains bullish on AI innovation, aiming to strengthen its competitive position in global markets like AliExpress and Lazada.

9 July 2024 – Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. is leveraging generative AI-powered tools to assist cross-border merchants with translation, content creation, and product returns, announced Kaifu Zhang, Vice President of Alibaba International Digital Commerce, at the Reuters Next Conference in Singapore.

Despite escalating tensions between China and the U.S., Zhang expressed confidence in AI’s potential for Alibaba, noting that China is on par with the U.S. in terms of AI innovation. He highlighted global advancements in open-source AI technology, particularly from China and Europe.

Alibaba’s sprawling tech conglomerate has been reorganizing its international e-commerce operations into a standalone business to enhance competitiveness across global marketplaces such as AliExpress and Lazada. Zhang acknowledged that while Alibaba had an early advantage, competitors like Shein and Pinduoduo (PDD.O) have outpaced its growth in recent years.

Alibaba International Digital Commerce Group now boasts 300 million annual consumers and over one million merchants worldwide, making it one of Alibaba’s fastest-growing segments. Earnings for the unit surged 44% year-over-year in the October to December period, underscoring its strategic importance within the company.
