Police Malaysia Busts an Internet Scam Syndicate
Aug 2, 2013 (Fri): Police Malaysia has arrested two Nigerian men, a local woman and a Japanese woman in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan after two women were reported to have been cheated of RM100,000, the Sun Daily reported.
They are suspected from an internet scam syndicate known as African Scam who has been active for the past three years. The syndicate is finding victims through social media networks, befriend with them and will tell the suspect that he has sent something valuable as a token of appreciation after a period of acquaintance. Later, the victim will receive a call from someone pretending to be from a courier company or customs officer asking for tax payment for the package.
The four suspects were remanded and the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which upon conviction carries a prison sentence of up to 10 years and caning and fine, the police said.
