Oct 28, 2013 (Mon): Communication and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek today launched the first Malaysian Data Centre Alliance (MDCA), which will oversee the collective development of data centres in Malaysia, Bernama reports. MDCA will also lead key initiatives towards growing the industry and play an instrumental role in transforming Malaysia into a preferred data centre hub in the region.
Ahmad Shabery said the data centre sector was identified as a key growth area under the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) and had in the past couple of years shown steady progress. He added that the industry recorded a half-year revenue of RM292 million and was set to achieve the targeted revenue of RM562 million for 2013, which marked a 20 per cent growth from last year. He expects the industry will contribute RM2.1 billion to the country’s Gross National Income (GNI) by 2020.
