Aug 16, 2013 (Fri): Most of the cyber-crimes happened in the country were involved criminals posting as a bank representative send emails, SMS or make a telephone call to obtain personal details such as credit card details, password, transaction authorization code (TAC) from victims, Joanne Wong, the assistant general manager of Association of Banks Malaysia told Bernama in an interview.
Joanne has shared few simple tips for publish to avoid becomes cyber-crimes victim. She advises:
- Banks never request banking details via email, SMS or phone call and please do not entertain for such requests;
- Should manually type the internet address of a bank for internet banking by yourself;
- Look for a padlock icon in its website address to ensure the authenticity of a secured banking website; and
- Do not access banking information at a cyber cafe or via wifi at public places;
- Using latest and updated anti-virus and security software.
The report shared that Crime Prevention Awareness Board had received 300 complaints involving losses amounting to more than RM1 million from January to June this year alone and Police Commercial CID also reported that losses due to cyber-crimes in the country last year amounted to RM1.6 billion compared with RM1 billion the year before.
