UnionPay Enhances Payment Experience for Chinese Tourists in Malaysia with Seamless QR Access and Summer Rewards

Following the mutual visa exemption between China and Malaysia, UnionPay International has rolled out expanded payment capabilities and exclusive offers across Malaysia to deliver a smoother and more rewarding travel experience for Chinese visitors.

MALAYSIA, 25 JULY 2025 – UnionPay International (UPI) is redefining the payment experience for Chinese tourists in Malaysia this summer by combining broad merchant acceptance, seamless QR integration, and exclusive seasonal offers. The enhancements come on the heels of the mutual visa exemption policy implemented between China and Malaysia on 1 June 2025, which has significantly boosted travel convenience.

Today, 95% of Malaysian merchants accept UnionPay cards at POS terminals, and the UnionPay App now supports DuitNow QR, Malaysia’s national QR code standard. This allows Chinese cardholders to make contactless payments at millions of locations, including restaurants, retail stores, hotels, tourist attractions, and airports.

To make summer visits even more enticing, UnionPay has launched a suite of promotions in collaboration with top merchants across key Malaysian destinations:

  • Kuala Lumpur: RM80 cashback at Pavilion KL (min. spend RM400), RM20 instant rebate at Watsons (min. RM120), gifts at Gateway@KLIA2 (min. RM150), and RM5 off at selected airport F&B outlets (min. RM40).
  • Selangor & Johor: Tiered cashback up to RM300 at Paradigm Mall PJ and JB, plus triple WCT Buddy Points for UnionPay users (up to 9 million points).
  • Penang: RM100 discount at Japanese restaurants ENOSHIMA, Kirishima, and Miraku (min. RM500), RM10 off at Entopia Butterfly Farm, and 10% off at Tapestree Café.
  • Durian Experience: RM32 off (min. spend RM150) at DKing durian outlets, plus a free Musang King Mooncake, while stocks last.

Full terms and redemption details are available on the UnionPay App and official website.

These initiatives are part of a broader strategic collaboration. In May 2025, UPI and Tourism Malaysia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Shanghai to promote tourism, enable more local merchants, and support Visit Malaysia Year 2026 through joint marketing and expanded payment access.

“From arrival to departure, UnionPay is committed to offering Chinese travelers a seamless, secure, and rewarding payment experience in Malaysia,” said Dr. Jian Jiangtao, Regional Head of UPI Southeast Asia. “Our goal is to integrate payments into every stage of the journey while supporting local tourism development.”

UnionPay’s services aren’t limited to inbound travelers. UPI is also enhancing cross-border capabilities for Malaysians traveling to China. Local UnionPay cards issued by Public Bank, ICBC Malaysia, Bank of China Malaysia, and AmBank can now be linked to WeChat Pay and Alipay, enabling cashless transactions in mainland China with zero international card fees.

As bilateral ties deepen and travel flows increase, UnionPay remains committed to empowering two-way digital payment ecosystems, facilitating greater economic and cultural exchange between China and Malaysia.
