A global survey by Kaspersky reveals alarming levels of acceptance of online stalking behaviors among dating populations and widespread vulnerability to cyber threats, emphasizing the urgent need for enhanced cybersecurity measures and legal protections.

15 February 2024 – A recent survey conducted by cybersecurity firm Kaspersky, spanning 21,000 participants worldwide, with a special focus on 1,000 respondents from Malaysia, has unveiled concerning insights into the prevalence of digital abuse and stalking in modern relationships. The study reveals shockingly high levels of acceptance of online stalking behaviors among dating populations, along with widespread vulnerability to cyber threats, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced cybersecurity measures and legal protections.

Key findings from the survey include alarming statistics, such as nearly half of Malaysian respondents admitting to Googling or checking social media accounts of new romantic interests, and almost half reporting experiences of online stalking from individuals they were newly dating. Despite growing awareness of online risks, a significant proportion of respondents expressed willingness to share passwords potentially compromising their privacy and security.

Experts stress the importance of implementing verification processes in dating apps, enhancing online safety guides, and empowering individuals to secure their digital presence effectively. Kaspersky continues to collaborate with experts and organizations to combat domestic violence and raise awareness about the risks of digital abuse.
