The largest and the only integrated media, broadcasting, entertainment and telecommunication group in Indonesia, Global Mediacom established a strategic partnership with Tencent, the largest Internet service portal in China, to localize and deliver Tencent’s online communication and online entertainment products for Indonesian market, such as WeChat, a free, mobile-based, cross-platform messaging and social networking service.
The companies selected WeChat by looking at the success of similar products, such as BlackBerry Messenger and WhatsApp due to the number of mobile phone users is on the rise in Indonesia. According to a report by Jakarta Post, SIM card penetration in Indonesia has surpassed 120 per cent, and the device manufacturers continue to see Indonesia as a potential market given the country’s expanding middle class.
