Microsoft’s Xbox Games Showcase unveiled new all-digital versions of the Xbox Series X and S consoles and trailers for over a dozen games, including “Call of Duty: Black Ops 6” and “Doom: The Dark Ages,” aiming to bolster sales and promote Xbox Game Pass amid industry challenges.
10 June 2024 – Microsoft kicked off its annual Xbox Games Showcase on Sunday, unveiling a new all-digital version of its Xbox Series X and S consoles and releasing trailers for more than a dozen games, including the highly anticipated next installment of “Call of Duty.”
This showcase comes at a pivotal time for Xbox and Microsoft as the gaming industry experiences a downturn, with publishers facing softer sales, layoffs, and studio shutdowns. Microsoft introduced three new gaming consoles: a disc-less version of the Xbox Series X and S consoles and a special edition of the Series X with 2 terabytes of storage. This hardware refresh aims to boost Xbox console sales, positioning it competitively against Sony’s (6758.T) PlayStation 5.
Among the games showcased were “Doom: The Dark Ages,” the latest installment in the storied “Doom” franchise, and a sneak peek at the newest “Gears of War” title, ending a five-year wait for one of Xbox’s most popular properties. Many of these games, including the new “Doom” and “Call of Duty,” will be available on Xbox Game Pass on the day of their launch, highlighting Microsoft’s investment in its subscription service amid a softer economy.
The showcase also featured a special segment from Activision Blizzard’s studios, detailing new features, characters, and gameplay for “Call of Duty: Black Ops 6,” slated for release in October. Developers Treyarch and Raven Software presented clips from the game’s campaign, set in the early 1990s, showcasing a new movement system allowing players to sprint in all directions, and offered a glimpse of the fan-favorite “Zombies” mode.
