Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) organized the eUsahawan and Gig Fest to showcase achievements in fostering inclusivity in the digital economy. With training programs benefiting entrepreneurs and students, MDEC aims to propel Malaysia’s digital landscape forward.
21 February 2024 – Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) orchestrated a landmark event today with the inaugural eUsahawan and Gig Fest at the esteemed Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. The event, graced by Minister of Digital, YB Gobind Singh Deo, highlighted the achievements of the eUsahawan and Global Online Workforce (GLOW) programs, emblematic of Malaysia’s commitment to fostering inclusivity in the digital economy under the Malaysia MADANI initiative.
Under the theme “The Opportunity is Here,” the eUsahawan and Gig Fest served as a catalyst for cultivating a digitally proficient culture, empowering individuals, graduates, and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) with essential skills for thriving in the digital landscape. Participants, including investors, entrepreneurs, startups, gig economy workers, and digital professionals, gleaned invaluable insights into leveraging digital technologies for job creation, product promotion, and market expansion through online platforms.
Since its inception in 2015, MDEC’s eUsahawan program has trained over 563,000 entrepreneurs nationwide, generating an impressive cumulative sales figure exceeding RM1.24 billion. With modules now integrated into tertiary education and vocational training institutions, the program significantly contributes to national digital roadmaps. This year, MDEC aims to train 30,000 SMEs and students, targeting RM35 million in sales, while establishing 100 new eUsahawan hubs nationwide.
The GLOW program, launched in 2016, has been instrumental in assisting over 105,000 participants in augmenting their income, collectively generating RM282.76 million in revenue. Particularly impactful for unemployed graduates, the program empowers individuals to excel as digital freelancers. Through collaborations with the Ministry of Higher Education and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, MDEC endeavors to train 5,000 tertiary students in high-value digital skills, paving the way for lucrative opportunities in regional gig job platforms.
The eUsahawan and Gig Fest not only provided a platform for businesses to garner support from local and international markets but also fostered global competition, securing sustainable income sources and positioning Malaysia as the ASEAN digital hub.
