The Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) has officially launched its MD Business Digitalisation Initiative (BDI) in Sarawak, marking the programme’s first rollout in East Malaysia. This nationwide effort aims to equip micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) with digital tools, including e-Invoicing and tailored solutions, to drive productivity and long-term growth.
MALAYSIA, 10 July 2025 – The Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) today marked a significant milestone with the launch of its MD Business Digitalisation Initiative (BDI) in Sarawak — the first of its kind in East Malaysia. This strategic move underscores the government’s commitment to advancing inclusive digitalisation for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) across all regions.
Officiated by Sarawak’s Minister for Utility and Telecommunication, YB Dato Sri Haji Julaihi bin Haji Narawi, the launch highlighted the importance of strong federal-state cooperation in supporting local businesses. The initiative aims to provide MSMEs with access to innovative digital tools that enhance productivity, streamline operations, and future-proof their business models.
“Sarawak is a vital part of Malaysia’s digital future, and we are committed to state-level transformation that fosters local innovation and generates sustainable economic opportunities,” said Anuar, representing MDEC. “This initiative builds a future-ready ecosystem, ensuring no MSME is left behind.”
The launch event featured exhibitions, live product demonstrations, and advisory sessions led by MDEC-accredited Digitalisation Partners. Sarawakian businesses now have access to over 400 certified solution providers, as well as digital maturity assessments to help chart their growth paths.
A key highlight of the rollout is the promotion of the National e-Invoicing Initiative, a major push by the Ministry of Digital in partnership with MDEC. Built on the Peppol framework, the initiative seeks to modernise invoicing processes by enabling real-time, interoperable digital transactions.
To ease adoption, a suite of Freemium and Affordable Solutions—offered by providers like Xero and Big Ledger Sdn Bhd—has been introduced. These tools are fully compliant with Peppol and LHDNM tax standards, helping MSMEs transition smoothly into a digital-first environment.
Deputy Minister of Digital, YB Datuk Wilson Ugak Anak Kumbong, emphasized the national significance of the initiative. “Sarawak’s MSMEs play a crucial role in regional economic development. Through digitalisation and e-Invoicing, they can achieve higher efficiency, transparency, and global competitiveness,” he said.
He also noted Sarawak’s unique edge: “The state’s leadership in renewable energy, combined with its digital ambition, creates a powerful platform for innovation. We look forward to deepening our collaboration for the greater good of the people and the economy.”
The initiative, introduced under the MADANI Government, reflects a whole-of-nation digital transformation approach. It is delivered in collaboration with Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC) and the Ministry of International Trade, Industry, and Entrepreneur Development (MINTRED) Sarawak.
With Sarawak’s Digital Economy Blueprint 2030 already underway, this public-private partnership is expected to accelerate in the coming months, bringing long-term benefits to local businesses and communities across the state.
