The Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), under the Ministry of Digital, has launched a targeted programme in Penang to empower SMEs with tailored digital solutions. This initiative aims to address industry-specific challenges, foster innovation, and enhance the digital economy.
14 January 2025 – The Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), in collaboration with the Ministry of Digital, has unveiled a significant initiative aimed at accelerating digital transformation for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The programme was launched this morning by Minister of Digital YB Gobind Singh Deo at the newly established Zon Utara Office in George Town.
Designed to address the unique challenges faced by Penang-based SMEs, the initiative focuses on equipping businesses with the tools, knowledge, and support necessary to thrive in the digital economy. It incorporates dialogue sessions, industry engagement, and actionable solutions to build a supportive ecosystem for digital innovation.
Speaking at the event, MDEC CEO Anuar Fariz Fadzil highlighted the importance of embracing technology to unlock growth and future-proof businesses. “Technology is a necessity in today’s rapidly evolving landscape. By adopting digital tools and innovative solutions, SMEs can significantly improve their efficiency, reach, and resilience in the global market,” he said.
The programme has already made an impact in Penang, with RM30.96 million awarded to Malaysia Digital (MD) grant recipients and 173 companies achieving MD status. Businesses with MD status benefit from tax incentives, grants, funding opportunities, and access to expansive networks. To encourage further adoption, the Ministry plans to unveil a new initiative to help SMEs reduce operational costs by up to 20% through customised digital solutions.
Deputy Chief Minister of Penang II, YB Jagdeep Singh Deo A/L Karpal Singh, and Digital Penang CEO YBrs Ts. Kwang Ming Ng were also in attendance, alongside local SME association leaders. Together, they expressed optimism about fostering innovation and collaboration within the state’s digital economy.
