MDEC has signed a landmark Letter of Intent with China’s Zhejiang University to drive digital transformation, AI development, and smart city innovation, aligning with Malaysia’s vision to become a leading digital economy under the MADANI Government.
MALAYSIA, 23 APRIL 2025 – The Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) and Zhejiang University have entered into a strategic partnership aimed at accelerating digital transformation, fostering artificial intelligence (AI) innovation, and developing smart cities in Malaysia. The collaboration is inspired by the renowned ‘Zhejiang Model’ — a benchmark in digital governance and urban modernisation.
The partnership was formalised through the signing of a Letter of Intent (LOI), setting the foundation for deep cooperation in talent development, research, and the deployment of advanced digital solutions.
MDEC CEO Anuar Fariz Fadzil described the alliance as a vital step toward Malaysia’s goal of becoming a regional digital leader. “This partnership reinforces MDEC’s core mission to build a robust digital ecosystem that incubates future-ready talent, drives innovation and supports cutting edge research,” said Anuar. He emphasized that the initiative aligns closely with the MADANI Government’s priorities in digital transformation, especially in areas such as AI security, data management, and smart infrastructure.
Zhejiang University, one of China’s most prestigious academic institutions, brings a century-long legacy of research excellence and technological advancement. It is also known for nurturing global tech innovators, including Liang Wenfeng — the founder of DeepSeek, a pioneering company in Generative AI that has significantly reduced the cost barriers to deploying powerful AI models.
With this partnership, MDEC aims to tap into Zhejiang University’s expertise to empower Malaysian researchers, bolster AI innovation, and catalyse smart city initiatives across the country.
