McDonald’s Malaysia Partners with IWK to Enhance Waste Management and Sustainability

McDonald’s Malaysia has signed a Fats, Oil, and Grease (FOG) Desludging Services Agreement with Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) to maintain grease traps at nearly 300 outlets nationwide. This collaboration aims to improve waste management, enhance environmental sustainability, and support Malaysia’s green initiatives.

MALAYSIA, 27 February 2025 – McDonald’s Malaysia has officially partnered with national sewerage company Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) Sdn Bhd to enhance waste management and environmental sustainability. The agreement, which covers desludging services for grease traps at almost 300 McDonald’s restaurants nationwide, underscores the brand’s commitment to operational efficiency and sustainability.

This initiative will see IWK providing regular desludging services to prevent FOG buildup, reduce plumbing issues, and maintain optimal kitchen drainage performance. The move aligns with McDonald’s Malaysia’s broader strategy to minimize environmental impact and comply with local regulations.

“As a brand that serves 9 million customers each month, we recognize our responsibility to ensure efficient and environmentally sustainable operations,” said Dato’ Haji Azmir Jaafar, Managing Director and Local Operating Partner of McDonald’s Malaysia. “Through this collaboration with IWK, we are actively working to prevent water pollution, reduce waste, and contribute to Malaysia’s sustainability goals.”

Narendran Maniam, CEO of Indah Water Konsortium, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of proper grease trap maintenance. “We are pleased to collaborate with McDonald’s Malaysia in reinforcing our shared commitment to a cleaner and greener future. Preventing FOG from entering sewerage systems is crucial in mitigating environmental harm, and this partnership ensures responsible waste management while supporting cleaner water sources.”

Beyond operational benefits, this initiative supports a circular economy by enabling collected grease to be repurposed for biodiesel and biogas production. This ensures waste reduction while converting byproducts into valuable resources, strengthening McDonald’s Malaysia’s sustainability agenda.

Additionally, routine grease trap maintenance enhances restaurant hygiene, ensuring a cleaner and safer dining environment. The collaboration is part of McDonald’s Malaysia’s broader sustainability efforts, complementing initiatives such as green restaurant designs, solar PV installations with Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), the deployment of EV chargers at selected outlets, and waste reduction programs.

By continuing to engage in strategic partnerships, McDonald’s Malaysia reinforces its commitment to sustainability, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 17: Partnership for the Goals.
