MALAYSIA, 30 APRIL 2025 – Malaysia’s digital economy is experiencing robust growth, with the Ministry of Digital reporting a staggering RM7.9 billion in investments from January to April 2025. This surge is set to generate 6,480 high-value jobs and solidify Malaysia’s position as a leading digital hub in the region.

The announcement was made by Minister of Digital, YB Gobind Singh Deo, during the official launch of the Ministry of Digital’s Northern Regional Office. He highlighted the job creation as a critical step toward nurturing future-ready digital talent and driving national innovation.

“These new opportunities will not only offer gainful employment to Malaysians but also cultivate a new generation of digital innovators to power the nation’s growth,” said Gobind.

Out of the 148 companies awarded Malaysia Digital (MD) status in this period, Artificial Intelligence (AI) firms accounted for the largest segment at 27%, followed by Data Centres & Cloud (23%), and Global Business Services (11.5%).

Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) CEO Anuar Fariz Fadzil emphasized that the investment momentum reflects strong global confidence in Malaysia’s digital ecosystem. “We are moving beyond building capabilities to establishing a national culture of innovation for long-term growth,” he said.

In conjunction with the office launch, MDEC hosted the MD Open Day, a platform to highlight key initiatives, encourage public-private partnerships, and promote dialogue around digital innovation, talent development, and technology adoption.

A key highlight of the event was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between MDEC and Digital Penang, focusing on the adoption of Big Data, AI, Web3, cybersecurity, and blockchain. The collaboration aims to empower startups and SMEs in the northern region through mentorship, funding, and access to global markets.

“Through strategic regional partnerships and initiatives like the MD Open Day, we’re ensuring inclusive growth where no state or community is left behind,” said Gobind.

The event was also attended by YB Jagdeep Singh Deo, Deputy Chief Minister of Penang II; YB Tuan Zairil Khir Johari, Penang EXCO for Infrastructure, Transport, and Digital; and YB Tuan Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh, Chairman of MDEC, alongside key industry stakeholders.
