Malaysia Launches Pioneering Digital Inclusion Programme for Girls and Young Women in Tech

Malaysia has launched the Next Gen TeenXChange and Game Changers Coalition Programme, a groundbreaking initiative by UNICEF, MDEC, and supported by Micron Technology and BSN. The programme aims to close the gender gap in gaming and STEAM by equipping Malaysian girls with technical skills and industry exposure.

MALAYSIA, 31 JULY 2025 – Malaysia is taking a significant step toward fostering digital inclusion with the launch of the Next Gen TeenXChange and Game Changers Coalition Programme—an initiative designed to empower girls and young women in the fields of gaming and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics). The programme is a collaboration between UNICEF, the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), Micron Technology Malaysia, and Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN).

The initiative was officially launched by YB Datuk Wilson Ugak Anak Kumbong, Deputy Minister of Digital Malaysia, who emphasized the government’s ongoing commitment to creating inclusive digital opportunities for young women. This programme, embedded within UNICEF’s global Skills4Girls framework, seeks to equip Malaysian girls with vital technical skills and foster their confidence in emerging tech fields.

“We are committed to building an inclusive digital nation,” said Datuk Wilson. “Through MDEC, we are providing the tools and platforms that will enable all Malaysians, particularly women and girls, to thrive in the digital age. Initiatives like this contribute to a broader national vision to nurture innovation, foster digital confidence, and create new pathways for success.”

Empowering the Next Generation of Tech Innovators

The Next Gen TeenXChange programme focuses on Malaysian youth aged 15 to 20 with strong digital aptitude. Participants will have access to hands-on tech activities, upskilling workshops, mentorship from industry leaders, and exposure to Malaysia’s rapidly growing gaming ecosystem. The initiative is a key component of MDEC’s #MyDigitalMaker campaign, which has been pivotal in encouraging digital literacy across the nation.

Designed to specifically address the gender disparity in gaming and technology, the programme aims to inspire young women to explore careers as coders, designers, content creators, and tech innovators. By building confidence and providing industry exposure, it opens doors for girls to lead and create change in the digital world.

In addition to skills development, the programme encourages participants to contribute to the growing body of inclusive digital content, positioning them as agents of change not only within the gaming industry but across the broader tech and innovation sectors.

Aligning with Malaysia’s National Digital Vision

The Next Gen TeenXChange programme is aligned with Malaysia Digital (MD), the national strategic initiative to accelerate Malaysia’s digital economy. By supporting young women’s involvement in STEAM fields, it advances the government’s vision of an innovation-driven, inclusive digital economy that empowers diverse talent across all sectors.

The launch of this programme underscores Malaysia’s commitment to advancing digital literacy, fostering inclusivity, and nurturing a generation of women who will shape the future of technology.
