Kaspersky has signed an MoU with Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia to enrich its Information Security Programme with global expertise, training, and real-world threat intelligence. The initiative aims to close Malaysia’s cybersecurity skills gap as ransomware threats surge and demand for cyber professionals rises.

MALAYSIA, 27 AUGUST 2025 – Kaspersky has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) to bolster the university’s new Information Security Programme, aligning with Malaysia’s national agenda to develop future-ready digital talent. This collaboration will equip educators and students with industry expertise, hands-on training, and real-world cybersecurity tools to meet the growing demand for skilled professionals.

Malaysia faces an acute shortage of cybersecurity talent. Kaspersky data shows ransomware detections in the country surged by 153% year-on-year, with 27.9 million online threats recorded in 2024. A joint study by the Department of Skills Development, The Centre for Instructor and Advanced Skill Training (CIAST) and Cybersecurity Malaysia (CSM) estimates the country will need at least 27,000 cybersecurity experts by 2025, yet current supply remains insufficient. With Malaysia’s cybersecurity market projected to reach US$2.17 billion by 2030, bridging this talent gap is critical to sustaining digital growth.

Under the MoU, Kaspersky will enhance UTHM’s curriculum with industry-developed courses and materials, provide professional development for faculty, and give students practical exposure to enterprise-grade cybersecurity practices. These initiatives will also expand the university’s research capabilities and boost graduate employability in line with industry standards.

“Cybersecurity is the foundation of trust in our digital world, and building its talent is as crucial as advancing infrastructure,” said Evgeniya Russkikh, Head of Cybersecurity Education at Kaspersky Academy. “Through this collaboration, we are investing in a new generation of Malaysian cyber defenders equipped with world-class skills to safeguard national progress.”

Professor Dr. Afandi Bin Ahmad, Provost of UTHM Pagoh Branch Campus, added, “This partnership not only strengthens our academic capabilities but also enhances our global connections, giving our students and faculty access to industry expertise in cybersecurity.”

UTHM was recently recognised at the Cyber Defence and Security Exhibition (CYDES) 2025 as one of six Malaysian universities advancing research collaboration and talent development in cybersecurity. The MoU extends Kaspersky’s long-standing commitment to nurturing Malaysia’s cyber talent, building on prior collaborations with Universiti Malaya, Universiti Kuala Lumpur, and nationwide outreach programmes delivering awareness workshops and resilience training.
