The company continues to advance sustainability initiatives globally, including in Malaysia.
MALAYSIA, 11 DECEMBER 2025 – Equinix, Inc. (Nasdaq: EQIX), the world’s digital infrastructure company, has been named a Leader in the inaugural IDC MarketScape: Worldwide Datacenter Services Sustainability 2025–2026 Vendor Assessment. The report underscores Equinix’s strong environmental commitments and highlights its leadership in driving sustainability across global datacenter operations.
According to the IDC MarketScape, Equinix stands out for its comprehensive sustainability strategy spanning renewable energy sourcing, water stewardship, circularity, heat reuse and export, and green financing mechanisms. “Equinix has demonstrated leadership in sustainable datacenter operations,” said Olga Yashkova, Research Manager for Enterprise Workloads and Datacenter Infrastructure at IDC.
With more than 270 data centers across 77 metropolitan areas in 36 countries, Equinix serves as a critical connectivity hub for enterprises, cloud providers, and rapidly growing AI ecosystems. The assessment notes Equinix’s global application of energy- and water-efficiency measures, positioning the company as a trusted sustainability partner for organizations working to decarbonize their digital infrastructures.
Christopher Wellise, Vice President of Sustainability at Equinix, emphasized the company’s readiness to meet rising demand for sustainable digital infrastructure. “Our decades of pioneering new sustainability breakthroughs, combined with next-generation energy solutions and enhanced operational efficiencies, are setting new industry standards,” he said.
The recognition comes as Malaysia accelerates its adoption of AI, cloud, and digital technologies. Cheam Tat Inn, Managing Director of Malaysia at Equinix, reiterated the company’s commitment to supporting the nation’s sustainability goals through improved energy and water efficiency and increased use of renewable energy.
The IDC report highlights several Equinix achievements, including a 245% increase in waste heat reuse in 2024, with 14.5 GWh of residual heat exported from its data centers. Locations such as Helsinki, Toronto, and Paris are already using Equinix facilities to supply excess thermal energy to district heating networks and community systems.
Equinix also reported notable performance in water and energy management. Its water program achieved an average Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE) of 0.95 in 2024, supported by engineering innovations such as water-free cooling and thermal storage. The company’s global Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) improved to 1.39, with a target of reducing it to 1.33 by 2030.

Aligned with science-based climate targets, Equinix plans to achieve net-zero emissions across its value chain by 2040. It has already achieved 96% renewable energy coverage globally, reaching 100% in the Americas and EMEA regions. Additionally, the company has issued over US$9 billion in green bonds since 2020, funding green buildings, renewable energy systems, energy efficiency initiatives, and next-generation technologies such as fuel cells for onsite power.
Equinix also supports enterprise sustainability goals by offering detailed customer decarbonization reporting, which includes electricity usage, renewable energy coverage, carbon emissions, and water consumption metrics.
