With Malaysians consuming more microplastics than any other nation, Earthya has introduced a fully plastic-free compostable bag designed to decompose naturally without leaving harmful residues. Developed by Zaneco Sdn Bhd after three years of research, the innovation aims to curb the country’s growing plastic waste crisis.
MALAYSIA, 20 AUGUST 2025 – Malaysia uses about nine billion plastic bags annually, many of which break down into microplastics that end up in the food chain. A study reported by The Straits Times found Malaysians consume an average of 502.3 milligrams of microplastics per person daily—the highest intake among 109 countries surveyed. More than half comes from fish consumption, highlighting how single-use plastics, when poorly managed, impact both the environment and public health.
To address this issue, local eco brand Earthya has launched the Earthya Compostable Bag, a product developed by Zaneco Sdn Bhd over three years of research. Unlike many so-called biodegradable bags that still release microplastics, the Earthya bag is completely plastic-free, made from premium calcium carbonate and certified compostable polyester. It decomposes naturally into plant fertiliser in home or industrial composting conditions, leaving no microplastic residue.
Founder Ivan Chan Bin Iuan, who is also CEO of Zantat Holdings Berhad and Zaneco Sdn Bhd, said the initiative reflects a commitment to both innovation and environmental responsibility. “We want every household to have access to a trash bag that is safe for the planet and safe for our families. If even one person makes this switch, it reduces microplastic generation—and when thousands join, the impact becomes significant.”
The Earthya Compostable Bag offers five key advantages:
- 100% plastic-free and microplastic-free
- Naturally decomposes without special equipment
- Two-year shelf life, longer than typical compostable bags
- Durable and familiar in feel for everyday use
- XS size designed for household kitchen bins to reduce methane emissions

The bags are certified by TÜV Austria (OK Compost Home), MyHijau (Malaysia), BPI Compostable (US), and Australia’s AS4736 industrial composting standard. Additionally, calcium carbonate in the material enriches soil by balancing pH levels after decomposition.
Beyond product innovation, Earthya actively conducts environmental talks, exhibition outreach, and educational campaigns to raise awareness of microplastic hazards and inspire eco-friendly living.
