More people will shop online via mobile in 2015

KUALA LUMPUR: RM3.43 billion online transactions (approximately 60% of the online shopping market value) is expected to be made via mobile devices in 2015, driven by higher penetration of smartphones and mobile internet devices in Malaysia, says PayPal South-East Asia and India Managing Director, Elias Ghanem. He added that the change in consumer behaviours also will drive the mobile commerce in Malaysia to grow more than seven times, compared with only RM100 million (only 6% of the online shopping market value) in 2010.

PayPal’s online and mobile shopping insights 2011 study revealed that 25 per cent of the online shoppers are willing to make a purchase on their mobile phones. The study shows Malaysians spent RM337 million through their smartphones in 2011 against RM108 million via mobile internet devices such as tablets.

PayPal Mobile Asia Pacific Director Rahul Shinghal recommends that online retailers to enhance their online store with mobile experience, to seize the opportunity in mobile commerce which is growing fast in the country.
