1 June 2020 – Department of Statistics Malaysia has released its Wholesale & Retail Trade Census (WRC) 2019 which reveals the statistics on Wholesale & retail trade sector such as the number of establishments, sales value of goods & services, cost of goods sold, value of gross output, value of intermediate input, value added, number of persons engaged, salaries & wages paid as well as value of fixed assets owned. In addition, statistics on Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), women ownership in business and usage of information and communication technology are also presented in the report.
In 2018, the number of establishments operated in Wholesale & retail trade sector were 469,024 with a growth of 4.8 per cent. Selangor recorded the highest number of establishments with 94,857, followed by W.P. Kuala Lumpur (71,433). Total sales value of goods & services generated was RM1,270.8 billion with a growth of 8.6 per cent. Wholesale trade sub-sector was the largest contributor for total sales value of goods & services with RM663.7 billion (52.2%), followed by Retail trade (RM459.9 billion; 36.2%) and Motor vehicles (RM147.2 billion; 11.6%).
Number of persons engaged in this sector were 2.0 million persons with salaries & wages paid of RM62.9 billion with a growth of 3.3 per cent and 10.0 per cent respectively. Retail trade sub-sector recorded the highest number of persons engaged which were 1.17 million persons.
A total of 461,975 establishments were categorised as SMEs and recorded an annual growth rate of 4.7 per cent. Micro-sized establishments registered the highest number establishment of 378,145, followed by small-sized establishments (75,736) and medium-sized establishments (8,094). SMEs sales value posted RM809.6 billion which contributed 63.7 per cent to the total sales value for this sector. Small-sized establishments generated the highest sales value of RM373.4 billion, followed by micro-sized establishments (RM258.6 billion) and medium-sized establishments (RM117.7 billion). The number of persons engaged for SMEs were 1.75 million with the highest number of persons engaged was registered by micro-sized establishments with 892,455 persons, followed by small-sized establishments (657,273 persons) and medium-sized establishments (196,916 persons).
Meanwhile, women-owned establishments in Wholesale & retail trade sector recorded 91,043 establishments with a growth of 4.7 per cent. Sales value amounted to RM81.3 billion with a share of 6.4 per cent to the total sales value for this sector. Total number of persons engaged registered 267,974 persons.
In terms of information and communication technology, 89.6 per cent establishments used computers in Wholesale & retail trade sector. Meanwhile, 84.0 per cent establishments used internet and 52.2 per cent used web presence. The highest information and communication technology usage was posted by W.P. Kuala Lumpur, while Selangor recorded the highest e-commerce income of RM44.2 billion.
