Giant Hypermarket Offers Customers Using ATM Cards to Pay for Purchases

Jan 29, 2014 (Wed): Giant, a pioneer in the concept of modern supermarket shopping, launched its e-debit transaction service at all 128 stores nationwide yesterday, Bernama reports.

According to Ruben Brusch, marketing director of Giant, Giant is the first hypermarket chain in Malaysia to provide the convenience of cashless transactions using ATM cards to Malaysian shoppers. “Besides eliminating the risk and costs arising from handling cash, it also lowered the cost of doing business as the merchant discount rate for ATM cards is lower than credit cards,” Brusch said.

Last year, 5.2 million point-of-sale ATM transactions worth RM2.4 billion were recorded, according to Peter Schiesser, the managing director of Malaysian Electronic Clearing Corporation Sdn Bhd (MyClear). MyClear provides retail e-payment services including e-Debit, Direct Debit, Interbank GIRO and FPX.

In conjunction with the launch, Giant is running a campaign to encourage customers to use ATM card for payment when shopping at Giant stores. Customers who spend a minimum of RM100 using ATM card at Giant, they can become one of five lucky winners to win an all-expenses paid trip to watch FIFA WorldCup in Brazil. The contest period is from 28 Jan until 28 April, 2014.
