Adoption of E-Commerce among Malaysian SMEs still at early stage

KUALA LUMPUR: RM247.46 million potential sales was generated from the business matching sessions in the small and medium enterprise innovation showcase, SMIDEX 2012 held last week. Information and communication technology (ICT) is one of the industries that contributed the growth, according to SME Corp chairman Datuk Dr Ir Mohamed Al Amin Abdul Majid.

Besides helping small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to reach out to more potential customers without geographical barriers, E-Commerce also increases the competitive advantages of SMEs in terms of quality and accessibility, to compete with large firms. SME Corp urged SMEs to adopt e-commerce to have greater outreach than conventional market. However, recent study revealed the internet accessibility and adoption of online payment is still relatively low for SMEs in Malaysia, SME Corp Chief Executive Officer Datuk Hafsah Hashim said.
